One Pattern, Three Dresses

I guess I was busy last week! In just a few days, I managed to make these three variations on one dress pattern. I couldn't stop thinking about the perfect summery simplicity of this dress, so I decided to draft a pattern of my own. It ended up being easier than I expected and I'm a little obsessed with the result! The first floral version was my "wearable muslin" (well, kind of---it's actually really see-through so I have to wear something underneath) because I needed to make sure the dress actually fit without ruining my nicer fabric. Then I made a "real" version with this amazing Ikat fabric.

After completely failing to find something to wear to a wedding last Saturday, I decided to make a third version out of an airy silk. I was really attracted to this turquoise crepe de chine at the fabric store, which is weird because I usually avoid bright colors. (Also - I couldn't find that perfect dusty pink I was looking for). At the last minute, I decided to change up the pattern a bit and pleated the skirt instead of gathering it. I was hoping for a leaner, more elegant look. The dress turned out nicely (except for the fact that it kept wrinkling a little more every time I sat down--oh well!). I still want to make more versions of this pattern because it's so comfortable! Maybe stripes next?

New Dress Project

This week I whipped up a last-minute dress for a wedding tomorrow. I have the hardest time finding something to wear to fancy events! Maybe I'm just too picky, but I never seem to be able to find exactly what I want when I actually need it. And, after looking at so many pricey + poorly made dresses, I decided I would be much better off making something simple myself. I picked a pretty turquoise crepe de chine that's so light and airy. I'll share pictures soon!

Summer Sample Sale!

My Etsy shop is now open with a small selection of handmade items for summer! Most pieces are one-of-a-kind samples available at one size only. The dyed dresses, skirt, and blouse are all results of my dyeing experiments this spring. It was exciting to dye each piece because the colors and patterns were pretty unpredictable. I really love the results, though. I may decide to make more dresses...possibly with a few tweaks to the pattern. It's a very labor-intensive process! Visit the shop to check out the pieces.

Hello Summer

Summer is in full swing and I'm taking advantage of this hot and lazy weekend to get back into this blog! It's been a whirlwind summer so far with weekend beach travels, BBQ's, and, of course, lots of sewing projects. I love this breezy dress I recently made with the lightest silk fabric. I've been a little obsessed with triangles recently and I loved this fabric as soon as I saw it. Coincidentally, I noticed Vain and Vapid also spotted the same fabric and turned it into this lovely dress! I have a few more yards and would like to make a couple more dresses for my Etsy shop. I've got plans to reopen the shop with a handful of samples I made over the spring and summer. Keep your eyes peeled!

ERMIE Shift Dresses in Fire Season and Fragment Prints

Today I discovered a new textile designer to love on the wikstenmade blog: Ermie by Jennifer Parry Dodge. Her work really taps in to so many things I'm interested in right now---abstract, geometric prints, tie dyeing, unexpected colors. I would love a simple shift dress in one of these prints! I think my favorite is this Fragment Print dress. I am very, very tempted to treat myself to some of the fabric available in her shop (it's on sale!). There are also quite a few handmade dresses, skirts, and other garments available. I'm very curious to see what new things will come for spring and summer!

Spring Preview

I wanted to take a moment to show one of the things I've been hard at work on. This is the second garment I've sewn that I've also subjected to bleach dyeing experiments. I just love this fabric---it's super soft and silky and when soaked in a bit of bleach it turns from a murky brownish green to a beautiful shade of pink. I was intrigued by the idea of spraying the bleach to a create a different texture. This one fades into delicate splattered spots.

In my free time, I've been working on a couple more that I hope to finish up this weekend. More photos and updates coming soon!

I managed to tear myself away from my sewing machine this afternoon to throw on some red lipstick and take a quick outfit photo. Some days I find myself wishing for the perfect pair of pants, especially when a pair of tights can't stand up to the winter wind. I found these a few months ago at a thrift store and I really like them. I tried on an endless number of pairs before I could find one that fit even a little bit. I go through the same hassle at real stores, too, and lately I've had no luck finding the right pair. I've got my eye on something like this or this. I want a simple, straight-leg paint in something other than khaki or black! Surprisingly difficult to find. I've even thought about sewing my own pair, but finding the right pattern would be a whole other issue. For now, I will keep searching.

Making Progress

I've been busy working on some new ideas for spring things. I spent most of Saturday resting from a weird sickness and making stuff around the house. I had the chance to sit down and sew this blouse. The pattern still needs a few tweaks, but I'm liking how it looks so far! I've been drafting new patterns myself, so they definitely need a few test runs. I'm also planning on dyeing this blouse, too...so it might look totally different the next time I show it off.

I've also been working on some simple necklaces made of handmade beads. It's been fun playing around with Sculpey clay---I feel like a kid again! Making beads was basically a tradition every Christmas vacation when I visited my cousins in Ottawa. We'd spend hours at the kitchen table making silly things. These days, I love simple necklaces and I wanted to try a few combinations in neutral spring colors. I feel like I have too many ideas in my head these days and not enough time to work on them!

I decided to keep it simple this past Saturday. It was sunny and a tiny bit warmer and my boyfriend and I took a long walk to have brunch and then wander through Brooklyn Flea. I wanted to throw something on that was relaxed and comfortable. I made this shirt last fall and it quickly became one of my favorites. I think it's one of the nicest things I've ever made! I spent a lot of time focusing on the details and getting everything just right. It's one of the many Built by Wendy patterns I've made---and the fit is really nice.

I spent the rest of the day working on finishing my bleach-dyed dress. I just want to add one more detail before it's complete. I'm a little scared to wear it! Sometimes I wait forever to wear things after finishing them...I'm afraid I'll bust a seam or something.

In other nerdy sewing news, I ordered a serger! It's supposed to arrive on Thursday and I can't believe it! I'm hoping for speedy completion of many more projects!

A few things...

Here's a look at some of the things that have been keeping me busy over the last couple of weeks. I've done a couple of experiments dyeing with bleach, and this is the first thing I'm making from the results. It sounds silly, but it was exciting to see what would happen when I dipped the fabric! The colors were totally unexpected. I thought I would see lighter browns or creams, but reds and corals turned out instead.

I've also been playing around with beads and thread. I spent a couple of hours making beads from clay, just like I did when I was a kid. I'm still waiting on some supplies to arrive in the mail before I finish up this project.

Light Sunday

I'm slowly making progress in showing off some of the things I made last year. This dress was an end-of-the-summer project (there's a peek here). I honestly haven't worn it since September---it's been hiding on the rack between other warmer weather clothes. I pulled it out yesterday and realized it's actually great for layering and the light color is fresher than all my dark winter clothes. The dress is made from a modified 60s pattern. I used super soft linen with a woven stripe.

I was having a lot of trouble motivating myself to get out of the house and do something yesterday. I often spend Sundays just lazing around. Yesterday turned out to be a great day, though! We spent it walking around, eating delicious food, and relaxing with bloody mary's. I also had the day off of work today, so I spent the afternoon stocking up on things for new projects. I'll tell you about them soon enough!

This is a little out of the ordinary from my usual posts, but these dresses are just too cute not to share! I made both of them back in October for a friend's very special baby. She was finally born on Christmas Day! Unfortunately, she lives all the way across the country so I haven't been able to meet her yet.

I had never made kids' clothes before and I kept smiling over the fact that everything was so tiny! If you're ever looking to make something special for a little someone, I would recommend checking out the patterns by Oliver + S. Their kids' patterns are very cute, but not too cutesy. The packaging is really sweet, too. The instructions were straightforward and easy to follow. I made the tea party sundress in two sizes. I think the pattern also includes an option to make a onesie instead. And it's all so tiny!

Dyed Inspiration

I've been daydreaming lately about dying my own fabric. I'm a little obsessed with some of the painterly, tie-dyed fabrics I've seen over the past months. I imagine it can't be that hard to come up with something pretty all by myself. I am a little nervous about trying it in a small apartment...all I can imagine is dye getting everywhere. I really want to try it though! Silk would be the ideal fabric to dye, but I should probably start with something cheaper that won't be a total waste if I ruin it...

I just love the way the bottom of the skirt above looks like it's been dipped in color. The softness of the fabric definitely adds to it. I can imagine a whole slew of perfect spring dresses with dyed hems or abstract patterns like the ones below. I'll keep you updated if I try any crazy experiments. In the meantime, I'll be reading up on tips. Maybe I'll even sign up for a class. Please share if you have any tips of your own!

The Finished Skirt

Here's a peek at the finished skirt! It's a simple piece that will go with a bunch of things I already have in my wardrobe. This winter I've been digging around my drawers for skirts and never finding the right ones. I love the colors in this fabric---just the right muted tones I've been looking for this season.

Yesterday was a sunny and somewhat productive afternoon. I even thought about taking a few photos outside until my boyfriend and I went for a stroll and my face nearly froze off. So much for that idea. Instead, I'll stick to showing off sunny corners of my apartment. Welcome to my skinny kitchen!

My boyfriend got me this Erica Weiner necklace for Christmas--it's a mini terrarium! My top is actually an H&M dress (thrifted). The skirt is made by me, of course, and my belt and boots are also thrifted. Oh, and here's a sunny hello from my silly cat George!

A Saturday Sewing Project

Yesterday was cold and dreary and I spent the afternoon happily holed up in my sewing corner. I tackled a simple skirt project that had been on hold for months. It was pretty satisfying to make the whole thing from scratch. I drafted a simple gathered skirt pattern--basically a waistband and a front/back panel--and then stitched it all together. I thought about doing a quick tutorial post, but I kept forgetting to take photos along the way. Oops! I did document some of the process, though this is by no means complete.

Making the waistband was easy: I took my waist measurement and added a 1 1/4"extension for a button tab. I added a 1/2" seam allowance around the whole thing. For the skirt, I multiplied the waist measurement by 1.5. I didn't want the skirt to be too bulky because I used a heavier wool fabric. This resulted in a slight gather at the waist (and a wide enough hem for me to walk around easily). To make the front and back skirt panels, I just divided that number in half for the width, determined the length I wanted, and drew a rectangle. Easy! (I did actually make some mistakes while cutting--like cutting out the waistband on the wrong grain--but it all worked out in the end).

I cheated a little bit at the end and stitched through all the layers when topstitching the waistband. This makes it look a little sloppier on the inside, but I didn't feel like doing a lot of hand stitching... All in all I think this took me a few hours, which is great! I'm getting faster at starting and finishing projects, which encourages me to do more. Stay tuned for pictures of the finished skirt!

Snow Days

It's been awhile for sure! I decided to get my camera out this afternoon after returning from an extra long bus ride from Rhode Island. City traffic post-snowstorm is serious! There is so much snow out there---my street hasn't even been plowed yet. It was kind of nice to get an extra vacation day out of all this, but I almost wish I got snowed in here just to see how crazy it was.
Anyway, I've been pretty scarce around here for the past few months. I have high hopes for 2011, though, and I want to get back to updating this blog! This dress was my most recent project. I sewed it up one afternoon after modifying the dress pattern from Built By Wendy's Sew U Home Stretch. I added a scoop neckline and gathered skirt. I'm hoping to make another slightly modified version for New Year's out of black velvet...guess I better get started!

This is the second dress I made (after this one) during my end-of-summer sewing spree. I'd been holding on to the fabric---a really nice lightweight wool crepe--for pretty much the whole summer. I found it for super cheap on the excellent remnant rack at P&S Fabrics in Chinatown (they almost always have something great for next to nothing). I immediately loved the abstract stripe pattern and navy is always one of my favorite fabric colors to buy. It didn't really feel appropriate to make a wool dress in the middle of summer, though, and so the fabric stayed at the bottom of the pile.

I also couldn't quite decide what style dress I wanted to make. The print reminded me a bit of tribal patterns and I had a vague idea of a simple sun dress with thin straps. I eventually stumbled on a low-cut wrap dress pattern on Etsy that seemed like a great fit. Besides having to do a few tweaks here and there to prevent indecent exposure, the dress turned out pretty nicely. Since the fabric is wool, it will be a great for layering come cooler weather. It's light enough to feel a little dressy, but it will still keep me warm!

Cuff, collar, and other pieces on my messy work table

I kind of did a double take when I first saw this dog print fabric. The first thing that came to mind was the amazing Miu Miu cat print from this past spring. I looked at the fabric for a few minutes then proceeded to wander around the fabric store for way more time than necessary, trying to decide whether dogs could be as cool. The lightweight silk would be ideal for making a basic button-up for fall and I knew I had the Built by Wendy shirt pattern somewhere in my stash from Sew U. I ended up walking out without buying it, still undecided on the print (and whether I could find the shirt pattern at home).

Well, I couldn't get the fabric out of my head for the rest of weekend. I kept picturing it in different outfit combinations. I went back to the store this past week and snatched it up. I still think the print is pretty silly and I don't know if this shirt will come out looking cool or totally weird, but I do love sewing experiments! I'll keep you posted on the end result...

Sunny Saturday afternoons are perfect for playing around with funny combinations. I'm not usually one to mix prints, but I'm trying to loosen up a bit on what I'll wear together. This outfit made be feel like it was springtime and I spent the afternoon biking to Williamsburg (not in these shoes!) to pick up a few more plants for my apartment. I actually made this skirt in a matter of hours one night before I went on vacation at the beginning of August. It's not perfect, but I felt like I needed a light stripey skirt in my wardrobe and I kind of got sick of waiting around for one. I made this blouse last summer out of the prettiest vintage cotton (there's also a dress).

When I was locking up my bike, some lady snapped a picture of me out of the window of her car. I always get weirded out by that! I sometimes have a secret fear of ending up on one of those DON'T pages where they block out your face and list all of the wrong things you're wearing...haha.Whatever, lady, I'm gonna mix prints as much as I want!

Whoa! It's been forever since I've shown my face around here and I'm really starting to miss it! I'm a little sad and a little excited that the summer is ending and we're heading into cooler weather. A bunch has happened in the last couple months: I moved to a new apartment, went on vacation, turned 24, and probably lots more... I've made some new dresses that I've got to show off, including this linen dress. It's hard to see in this after-dark photo, but it's made of super soft striped linen that's nice and breezy. I want to take some proper photos soon!

It seems like I've been sewing in almost every spare moment lately. There are so many things I want to make for fall! Shirts, pants, a cape, maybe even a jacket?? I also just started a pattern-making class at FIT--I can't wait for the day when I can draft some designs of my own! I expect that I'll soon be posting lots of new creations...

Brooklyn Summer

Yep, it's summertime in NYC and it's hot! Not that I'm complaining...I'll take anything over last year's awful rainy, cold joke of a summer. This photo was taken a few weekends ago on an incredibly hot Saturday. My good friend Kathleen (on the left) and I were taking a post-brunch stroll back to her air conditioned apartment. (Thanks Adrienne for taking the photo!). We also both happen to be wearing dresses made by me. I made Kathleen's special birthday dress out of a light purplish chambray (from this pattern!) that I think is just perfect for picnics in the park. I'm wearing the completed version of this dress, which I still have yet to post on this blog. Eek! Consider this a little sneak peek...

I'm heading out of town next weekend and desperately want to make a mini-summer-vacation dress, but I'm taking another sewing class at FIT that is consuming ALL of my time! This weekend will involve hours and hours of me sewing wool and silk. Perhaps I'll post a quick peek at the jacket at I'm working on. There also might be another Etsy update in the works. Fingers crossed!

Summer seems like it's in full swing over here, which means lazy days spent outside and major neglect of this little blog. I've got to get myself in gear though because I'm moving to a new apartment in a month and a half. I really really want to clear out the piles of vintage clothes that are building in spare corners of my apartment. It's been crazy crazy at work this week and I'm soo happy that tomorrow is Friday! I'm taking off to Delaware for a beach house weekend. I'm not sure what to expect, but as long as there is sunshine and a little sand it'll be fine with me! Since I had beaches on the mind, I felt compelled to finally sew a pair of shorts after thinking about it for months, ha. I picked up the prettiest Japanese cotton at NY Elegant fabrics just for this project. I whipped these up from a vintage 60s pattern in just a few hours. I (kind of) wish that I had paid more attention to the first muslin I made and taken them in a bit, but there's no going back now! With just a couple of tweaks they could be the ideal high-waist summer shorts! My next plan is to take a lesson from this tutorial and try making a scalloped hem pair!

Since the weather has turned wonderfully summery I've had tons of clothing ideas running through my head! The problem is that I definitely do not have enough time to complete them. This pretty accurately shows the projects that have been started and paused at the moment. I'm currently halfway done with the stripey dress (beginnings of the bodice shown here). Next up: shorts! And they may or may not have a scalloped edge or two thrown in....!

Hello, hello. I've managed to neglect this blog for quite awhile and I've realized that I miss it! It's been a busy, busy month (and a half) and I have a few finished things that I've got to share. I'll start off with some simple photos of this dress I made a few weeks ago from a 60s pattern. I was originally inspired by the braided neckline of this dress and I wanted to make something with a slimmer, sheath-style fit. I made a braided piece out of bias tape I made from the same fabric I used for the dress and hand stitched it to the neckline, which probably took just as long as making the rest of the dress! I've been kind of frustrated by the fact that pretty much every vintage pattern that I get in my size is actually far too big. This dress was originally way too baggy and I had to do a lot of last-minute fixes. I guess I'll know for next time, though!

I'm also wearing these silly/awesome flats that I found at a thrift store in Philly on Saturday. They are multi-colored pastel snakeskin and I like them a lot except for the fact that they are killin' my feet. Too stiff! I've got to break them in because they're lots of fun for summer.

Oh and here's a little bow made of scraps from a project I'm currently working on...more on that later!

Handmade // 50s Shirtwaist Dress

I feel like I'm on a roll with sewing projects lately. I've banned myself from buying new fabric until I get through most of the pile that I already have and the hints of spring weather are motivating me to make some warm weather clothes. I recently got this super light, sheer white cotton due to an ongoing obsession with all things sheer. It took me longer than necessary to decide what to do with it, but I finally decided to use it to make a 50s shirtwaist dress. I wanted counteract the somewhat masculine style of the dress by turning it into something light and airy.

I am really happy with how this vintage pattern turned out! My only modification was to the skirt--I made one that wasn't too full or too slim, but somewhere in between. I'm definitely going to be making this dress again in other fabrics. It looks almost like a uniform in white, but I don't mind at all. I'm hoping to find a pretty abstract print for the next version. I've never really been that into shirtwaist dresses, but I suddenly want tons of them for spring!

Before and After // Denim Shirtdress

Yikes! For some reason I found myself drawn to this incredibly long 90s denim dress at a thrift store a couple of weekends ago. I think picked it up and put it back on the rack at least 5 times. I thought that maaaybe I could chop a bunch of fabric off and turn it into something cute for spring. I just wasn't sure if it would actually turn out like I was imagining. After grumbling to myself about how indecisive I am, I decided to take it home and just go for it. Head to toe denim is not something I usually go for, but I wanted to try something new.

It's been freezing and raining all day, making a great opportunity to delve into my "to sew" pile. I've only actually gotten though this dress, but whatever--it's Saturday! I'm happy with how my new mini denim dress turned out and can't wait for it to warm up so I can wear it around. It's the perfect thing for a lazy spring Saturday. And, since this blog has really just started to be all about my sewing projects, I wanted to show how easy it is to turn something kind of ridiculous into some better!

Handmade // Black and White Dress

These photos are a little overdue, but here are some shots of my most recent sewing project. I decided to do a black and white and short sleeve version of this dress. I had an extra long weekend off from work for President's Day so I basically spent all of Friday in my little sewing room. This one came together surprisingly quickly since I had already made one dress from the pattern--I think it's the first dress I've finished in a matter of days rather than weeks. It's made of extra soft oxford cotton and I took the time to hem it by hand because I love the look of a deeper hem on fabrics that are a little sheer.

I really like how it turned out and now I'm almost too scared to wear it! I hardly ever wear white because I always end up spilling something. I just have to remember that it's not to be worn around red wine, coffee, or spaghetti, and maybe it'll maybe through the spring!

This blog has been in serious neglect lately so I figured I better show my face. I had day off of work today and I spent the afternoon sewing away. After a few hours, the bodice of a new dress is nearly done. I've been thinking about a white version of this dress for some time now and I'm finally getting around to making it. I decided to add sleeves this time so I can wear it by itself come spring. I'm going to start on the skirt as soon as I'm done with this post.

Brooklyn Sunday

Yesterday was a regular old Sunday in the best of ways, one that involved sleeping in, breakfast burritos at my neighborhood coffee shop, aimless wandering, and Roberta's pizza for dinner (brussel sprout pizza...YES!). We stopped by Brooklyn Flea in its winter home in the old Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower (now a luxury condo building, of course). The amazing thing is that the entire bank lobby is perfectly preserved, right down to the massive, art deco vault doors. In the basement you can actually walk into the old vault where there are groups of vendors selling their wares. After wandering around for a bit I found one stall of beautiful Edwardian and Victorian clothing. It was crazy to be able to examine everything up close--I wish I actually took some real photos because the details were so pretty!

After the market we wandered around Boerum Hill until my legs nearly froze off. My coat looks like a big warm cape, but I was definitely not wearing enough layers. I was whining all the way home. This coat was pretty much an impulse buy when I stopped into a vintage-y thrift store a couple of weeks ago. It's in perfect condition--the pockets were still sewn closed--and I like that it makes me feel comfy yet glamorous at the same time. It's nice to throw it on with jeans for an outdoor excursion and actually feel like I'm wearing an outfit rather than just a big winter coat.

P.S. I went on a bit of a vintage hunt on Saturday with a friend who was nice enough to drive me around, so I've got a sizeable shop update in the works. Yay!

I was so excited about the Built By Wendy Sew U: Home Stretch book I got for Christmas that I read it cover to cover on the train back to the city. I'd never sewn any kind of stretchy fabric before and the book's instructions were so easy to understand that I couldn't wait to start a project. Even though the book suggests starting with t-shirts, I really just wanted to go straight for a dress. After thinking about it for a month, I finally got around to making the dress this past week. I was pretty nervous that I'd mess it up because I don't have a serger or a walking foot for my machine, both of which are suggested. I definitely made a bunch of mistakes while testing a few scraps and got really frustrated at first. Then I found some very simple tips in this article (in case anyone is thinking of trying it out for themselves) and it got much easier from there.

The most surprising thing was how fast I was able to finish the dress. There were no darts to sew, no pressing of seams, etc., etc. so I was done in no time. It's super comfortable and I feel like I could throw it on for a bunch of different occasions. My favorite part is the puffed shoulders. They really stand out on a dress that might otherwise be too plain.

The book has quite a variety of projects and I'm looking forward to trying out another one. It's really rewarding to finish something in just a few hours and be able to throw it on. And hopefully next time the sewing will be a bit smoother and mistake-free.

Lately, I've been dreaming of ballerinas in ethereal tutus and floaty dance skirts. I'm imagining spring full of sheer white dresses that are airy and free. I think I arrive at this warm weather fantasy at some point every winter, but this year I've actually seen a few dancer-inspired collections for spring. The ballet-inspired Rachel Antonoff collection has been popping up everywhere, but it really is so wonderfully feminine. The details are perfect on nearly all of the pieces, like the brocade fabric of this white dress. I also discovered Keller on clever nettle the other day and I really like that some of the pieces from the S/S 10 collection almost look like antique undergarments (fit for dancing, of course). And, I couldn't leave out some of these beautiful vintage photos of dancers and their outfits. I'm pretty sleepy so I will leave you with these photos and a few requests: a ballerina dress, a garland of flowers, and spring.

I was too exhausted from the long weekend to post this yesterday (too many late nights!), but I decided to give you a simple look at what was running through my head while trying to get dressed on Monday. The weather was unusually nice and I kept leaving my apartment every half hour or so to check on some laundry. I think I changed my outfit every time I went out--I was either too hot or too cold and nothing seemed right. I finally decided on some shorts and tights and this wool cardigan for when I felt chilly. I found the sweater stuffed in between a bunch of ugly sweaters at the thrift store last week. It's pretty old and in perfect condition! I love the little round wool buttons and it's just the color I've been missing from my sweater pile.

I've been wanting to work these boots into practically every outfit since I found them last Friday. I'd been thoroughly disappointed after not being able to find them anywhere in my size until I happened to stop into this annoying Manhattan shoe store. (It's always crazy in there and they once sold me a pair of shoes that were radically different sizes after "replacing" one shoe that was broken, then gave me a hard time about returning them, blah!). As it turned out they had my size, and the boots were a lot cheaper than I'd seen them elsewhere (and I walked away with two same-size shoes). Lucky me! I think they're super comfortable, and I'm usually awful at wearing heels. Anyway, I spent the rest of my Monday wandering around with a friend and drinking a little too much wine for a Monday!

Lately, I've been wanting pretty much every pointelle sweater I see. I generally feel like I have a serious lack of shirts/sweaters that can stand alone in an outfit, probably due to the fact that I own more than a few dresses. Every time I try to pick out a skirt I end up searching my drawers for the appropriate top in vain. In steps pointelle: the lovely solution to my predicament. The holey patterns add just the right kind of texture to a sweater without looking overly cutesy or decorative. I've been really into simple pieces this season, but I find plain tops a little too boring. With pointelle, I like that the fabric itself is doing the work. As winter drags on, I have a feeling more than one of these sweaters will be making an appearance.

There's been a lot of talk about the Urban Outfitters' spring collections on the internet lately, and I couldn't help posting a few pretty photos from the site. I generally try to avoid UO, but every time I've stopped in a store recently I've been so tempted by so many things. I just think that their prices are a bit high for clothes that are often of questionable quality. This is exactly why I haven't bought anything from the Fletcher by Lyell collection (even though everything is oh so pretty!), but maybe I'm just being overly negative? Perhaps.
Anyway, all negativity aside, I love how these photos have a classy, vintage feel. All the pieces are extra feminine, but they aren't too cutesy, which I really like. I'm in love with the cutout lace top and I just might have to run to the store to check it out for myself. I also love the lavender romper--it's crisp, simple, and perfect for spring. The combination of darks with antique whites in almost every one of these photos is also very appealing. I think a creamy sweater and silky black tap shorts have just jumped to the top of my wish list.

New Dress

I'm so glad I waited to photograph this dress until yesterday because the sunlight really makes such a difference! This is my latest completed sewing project made from a 1960s shirtwaist dress pattern that I modified a bit. The biggest change was the collar. The pattern originally had a large sailor collar, but I had this picture in my head of a long, skinny, triangular collar. I spent some time drawing it up myself and I think it turned out pretty well! I am actually pretty pleased with the way this whole dress turned out. I really took my time to get the details right and it paid off. There are some tiny flaws, but overall this dress came together really nicely. This was also the first time that I made buttonholes with my machine. They aren't completely perfect, but they'll do!

The collar of this dress was also partially inspired by these incredible antique shoes (in the middle) from allencompanyinc. I think my heart skipped a little beat when I saw this photo! I originally wanted to make a gold collar, just like the design on the shoes, but I like this color gray and I happened to have the fabric already. I'm hoping to make this dress in other color combinations though, so maybe there will be a future version. I love the fit and I think that it will be perfect all the way through spring.

I was all excited to show off my finished dress that I half revealed in my last post, but the photos came out a little funny. So, I've decided to wait until the weekend when I can snap better ones in the daylight. In the meantime, I figured I'd do a lazier outfit post. I've been wearing tights and these boots pretty much every day since the subzero temperatures rolled in which I guess makes getting dressed rather easy when it merely involves swapping out dresses and sweaters. This is one of easiest dresses to throw on--it's made of what feels like a silk crepe with the prettiest triangle pattern woven throughout that reminds me of the 1920s. I found it when I was in San Francisco in October at a shop next door to the one of the most beautiful shops ever. I usually try to stay away from long dresses because I'm pretty short, but I couldn't leave this one behind. I've had a thing lately for subtly patterned or textured fabrics and this one sure is a beauty.

It's hiding in the top photo, but one my favorite new(ish) things is this Waldorf Astoria necklace by Erica Weiner. I love her designs and I thought this one was particularly cool. I just couldn't resist it at a sample sale a month or so ago. I already have her bee necklace and I would definitely collect all of jewelery if I could!!

Coming Together

I'm home sick from work today so I was able to snap a photo while it is still light outside for once. Here's a little peek at the dress I've been working on. It's almost done! I need to run out to get buttons for the front tonight and I still haven't decided which color to choose. Right now I'm thinking black, a matching gray, or maybe even gold? I'm excited and a little nervous to finish because I've never actually sewn buttonholes on anything before. It's silly because my sewing machine can make them pretty much automatically. I think I've just been too intimidated/lazy to try. I tried some practice holes last night, though, and it wasn't all that bad so hopefully this will be a success!
This is also a quick peek at one of the corners in my little sewing room. Decorating is an ongoing process, and mainly depends on what I come across at various thrift stores. I really like these prints that come from a book I found a few months ago. Anyway, I hope to have a finished dress to show off soon!

I've been wanting to wear an unusual amount of black and brown so far this winter, but there is something so perfect about the combination of red on white. Together they are just what is needed to brighten a winter day. I really like the idea of wearing a delicate white dress with just a touch red, like tights or shoes. Last January I resolved to try my hand at sewing in 2009. I was a little shaky at first since I hadn’t made anything in quite a few years, and even back then I was impatient and often would just throw things together. I guess it’s been an exciting year on the sewing front for me. I’ve learned a ton by trying things out for myself, browsing a few sewing blogs, and basically just going for it. I think my number one resolution for 2010 is to sew, sew, sew. It would be amazing if I could start MAKING more things for my wardrobe than I buy. This year I really want to learn new techniques and become a more skilled sewer overall. I also want to get better at blogging, too!

After seeing everyone’s year in review posts I thought it would be fun to do one of my own, so here’s a quick survey of my favorite creations (curiously organized by facial expression). One thing I have learned from doing this post is that I really like the color blue! Ha. Here’s to a very happy 2010! Thank you for sticking it out with me and reading this silly thing!

Hello there! It's been awhile and I figured I better show my face around here soon or else. It's been a busy busy holiday season and I finally have some moments to do some blogging! I've got a new haircut (bangs again) and lots of new ideas in my head for the new year. I picked up this dress at a vintage store in the East Village this fall and I think I finally found my favorite way to wear it. I'm not very good at layering, but this dress seems to fit better when I wear something under it. I apologize for the wrinkles, though. The fabric just doesn't like to stay pressed! Oh, and I finally dropped these oxford shoes off at the cobbler a couple of weeks ago after the soles had been flapping off for months (does that happen to anyone else's vintage shoes? It happens to all of mine). Now they are like brand new again! Well, I just wanted to pop in to say hi, I've got to get some sewing done before my eyes start to droop. A few weeks ago I found this funny "Victorian Book of Days" in the junk shop around the corner from me. I kind of liked some of the illustrations so I started flipping through it. The silly part is that it's actually an Avon book from 1983. (There are a ton of them available on ebay, which I also think is pretty funny, if you're interested.) I finally got the scanner in my apartment up and running so I decided to share!

I don't mind taking a little fashion inspiration from some pretty (if not somewhat cheesy) illustrations. The colors, the collars, the hats, and other details are all noteworthy! I especially like how the woman below is dressed in an almost-modern tuxedo blazer, and the hat and collar of the bottommost woman in white are just perfect! I certainly wouldn't mind strolling under a pretty parasol dressed in a bit of lace. And, the ladies up above look like they'd be pretty fun to pal around with.

During one of my recent searches for sparkles I came across these amazing 1950s dance leotards for just a few dollars a piece on Etsy! I was so anxious to get them in the mail and they finally arrived just before I went home last week. They are entirely impractical, but I don't really care. If nothing else, they'll make great decorations for my studio walls. The one on the left just has the best details, right down to the tufts of tulle at the straps. It might fit me, but I haven't dared to try it on just yet. I'm content just looking at it for now!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! I went back to Rhode Island to visit my parents and had more than my fair share of turkey, turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, etc. I spent the weekend relaxing, eating, and shopping. I've a got a few new things for the shop and other finds to share, including a pile of old bottles my brother found on the farm. I guess a section of one of the fields was used as a garbage dump for a number of years, and there were so many bottles and jars just sitting around. My brother was nice enough to share some of his finds and now I have a bunch of new containers for buttons and flowers.
Anyway, I whipped this dress together in a couple of nights last week. I had been anxious to work on the pattern since it came in the mail months ago. It's definitely not perfect---the size of the dress turned out to be much larger than I anticipated---but I added some quick fixes since I was determined to get it done before Thanksgiving. Some vintage patterns are tricky! I think I'm going to try it again with a couple of tweaks...
Oh and one sneaky cat made it into my photo, but I think he kind of fits with the scene!

Wow, it's been forever since I've done a proper outfit post! I've been extra busy these past couple of weeks with friends in town and long, crazy days at work. I've been laying low for the past couple of days, trying to catch up on some sewing. Hopefully I'll have a bit more time for blogging soon. Anyway, I woke up late today (as usual) with no idea what to wear. When I peeked in my closet, the little collar on this dress reminded me of some of the lovely looks from the Lyell Fall 09 Collection and I figured I could layer it with a warm cardigan. I even decided to twist my hair up in a bun.

Give Me Glitter

I don't know what's happened to me, but this season I've been wishing for the most peculiar things. All-back outfits? Ok, somewhat reasonable. But sequins? I don't think I've dared to even get close to glitter since maybe the 6th grade. For whatever reason, I've been strangely attracted to all things metallic or shiny. I haven't actually purchased any of this items yet, but I fear I just might! For any girl trying to fulfill her wildest sequin dreams, I'd recommend Topshop (see above) as an excellent place to start. Also, Etsy's selection is definitely not to be overlooked!

I found this lovely editorial that included some amazing pieces by New Zealand label Lonely Hearts. I really love the way they mix delicate fabrics with structured details. So pretty! Their lingerie line is extra nice, too!

Halloween and Other Things

This is going to be a silly and lazy post, but I wanted to post a shot from Halloween. I've always loved the holiday, but I find it harder and harder to think of a good costume every year. My strategy this time was to scour the thrift store for anything that caught my eye. I had just watched Days of Heaven the night before and I definitely had turn-of-the-century farmers on my mind when I picked out my outfit. It seemed to work, though. Everyone just kept saying "Oh, Little House on the Prairie" so I just went along with it. (One girl even got mad that I didn't have potatoes in my pail...which was weird).

In other news, I went to the Met today to see The Milkmaid and I fell in love with this painting. Aren't the colors just beautiful?

California Dreams

Hello friends! Sorry for the brief absence...I was on a little vacation in sunny California. It was altogether an amazing trip! I spent the first few days visiting best friends in San Francisco, then we took off down the coast to Big Sur for a reunion/adventure/camping trip. We hiked amongst giant trees, explored beautiful beaches, and sipped wine under the stars. Ah, what could be better? Here are a few photos from the trip (all stolen from Kathleen!).

Fall/Winter 09 Handmade

Two new handmade items are now available from Sacaton June! I've been holding on to them for awhile now, but they've finally made their way to my shop. The dress is adapted from a vintage pattern with the cutest little ties at the shoulders. I must confess that the colors are inspired by the latest Lula cover! This little blouse has an oversized collar inspired by a 1920s dress I've had in my closet forever. It's made of a vintage 1930s flour sack. The fabric is so nice and soft! I spent last weekend in Toronto visiting my aunts and uncles and cousins, and celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving. When I wasn't stuffing myself with delicious food, I was wondering up and down Queen Street checking out the vast number of little vintage shops. There are so many to choose from! I picked up these ankle boots in one shop. They're kind of like combat boots I guess, and I like pairing them with girly skirts and dresses. They're also nice and sturdy for the cold weather to come. My favorite shop I went in, though, was teeny-tiny and full of odd gifts and home goods. The shopkeeper was the cutest; she was just spending the day in bare feet and a little floral dress surrounded by piles of curious odds and ends, her overly friendly Boston terrier, and her sweet Siamese cat I let in from the cold. What a life!

Anyway...I haven't worn this dress since the spring and I realized it's perfect for fall, too! Oh, and there's just something about the cold weather that puts me in the mood for red lipstick...

Fall is here, as are shorter days and bad apartment lighting. Lately I've been noticing a bit of a pattern when it comes to getting dressed: black and white. I’ve never been so drawn to these colors as I am now. Instead of floral patterns, I’m really into subtle details, like pockets, buttons, and little socks with shoes. Here’s a quick glimpse of two quite similar outfits I threw together. I also figured I’d show off the wool blazer/jacket I thrifted and have been waiting to wear since last winter. I love how simple it is and how it makes me feel like poring through a great big stack of dusty old books.

For my whole life I've wished for crazy, frizzy, curly hair instead of my boring thin wisps. By now I've realized that's a pretty impossible dream, but that can't keep a girl from trying. Now that my hair is getting longer again, I'm excited to do some more experimenting with pin curls. After blow drying, I twirled up the ends and pinned them in place with little clips. (I watched this video a few months ago and it has a lot of great pin curling tips!) This time, I didn't curl the hair all the way to my scalp---just the ends. I slept on them overnight and ended up with easy to handle waves that surprising lasted all day. It was so easy that I just might start to make this a regular thing!

Eeek, I have been terrible at blogging this week so please excuse this poorly lit outfit post! I've been trying to transition into this in-between weather we've been having and tights and mini dresses seem just about right. This little 60s-style dress was somewhat of a recent Etsy impulse buy. The colors and the button waistband reminded me of the Dear Creatures fall collection that I like so much. I don't usually go for dresses in this color/print, but I was all the more tempted by the fact that it wasn't a typical choice. I think it worked out well enough! I'd like to try it with a simple black bow at the neckline, just like the Dear Creatures dress.

On another note, I just watched the videos on the new Lula mag site and I can see why everyone has been blogging about them! "Spell" just makes me want to dress up in black and cream, pin a bit of lace in my hair, and waltz slowly through the trees. Aahhh.

I didn't have a chance to gather a Best Of post this week, so I'm doing a little outfit post leftover from yesterday. I felt compelled to wear some of my newly thrifted goods from Wednesday. The weather has been especially fall-like this past couple of days and everything I found fit perfectly with my ideal color palette for autumn. I've never been successful at thrifting pants before, but I got lucky and found these in the best color. I paired them with a cream colored blouse with a big ruffly collar that I also found on Wednesday. Now that I see this photo, I think that I look perfectly prepared to wander the stacks of the library or perform some other studious activity, ha.

P.S. I'm still working on this new room and one of these days it won't be so thrown together! Let's hope...

This Labor Day weekend was probably one of the best yet. The warm, breezy days were filled with leisurely strolls, cloud-watching, bike rides, ice cream, and picnics. Yesterday we celebrated in Prospect Park with a fantastic spread of food and fresh squeezed lemonade. It was only necessary that I wear this new favorite dress of mine to the festivities. I made this dress a couple of weeks ago from some vintage ticking fabric I found in Providence. I almost ruined the dress halfway through (it was turning out to be a huge potato sack of a dress and so I chopped way too much off of the sides), but I ended up saving it! Now I want to make a hundred versions of this dress...but I have no pattern or simple way to go about it. It's a complete accident that it turned out the way it did. My favorite part is where I had to add a bit of extra fabric to the back...I forgot to take a photo of it though (probably the result of little too much Lillet Lemonade). I'll have to save that for another post!

As it turns out, it also happens to be the one year anniversary of this blog! I really can't believe it. When I started out, I had very little idea of what I'd end up blogging about and wasn't really sure what I was doing. Somewhere along the way I discovered the amazing gals of wardrobe_remix and so many other talented (and stylish) bloggers. This community has really changed the way I look at fashion in general and encouraged me to get back into doing some of the things I love...like sewing! Thank you so much to everyone who has ever stopped by this blog!

Here's a brief roundup of all the best things I've seen, done, read, or stumbled upon this week:

1. Discovering the autochromes of Arnold Genthe on Liebemarlene, especially the photo above. According to Wikipedia, this is a photo of Edna St. Vincent Millay, a lyrical poet and playwright, taken in 1914. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize and was known for her many love affairs! I personally love everything about her outfit and have since been trying to figure out how I could possibly make a blouse that looks similar for fall.

2. Deciding to finally reread A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. After seeing this post so many months ago, I was determined to return to it. I read the book when I was maybe 11 or 12, and have fond, but very vague memories of it. Well...it's just great so far! Every time I open the pages it's like I'm indulging in some happy little secret. Francie, who lives for the library, is stunned by nasturtiums, and is an expert at crafting mudpies, is a little girl after my own heart. It's also set in my neighborhood and I find it especially thrilling whenever a nearby street is mentioned.

3. I've been debating whether to head out west this October for a Big Sur camping trip with some best friends. The light coming through the trees in this photo taken at Party in the Pines at Big Sur just pushed me that much closer to buying my plane ticket.

4. Finding a pile of amazing old books at the Strand dollar racks on Tuesday. I love the covers of this set and I snatched them right up for my new sewing room. It's hard to decide which pattern is my favorite, but I think it's the top one! I also found a book about a couple of 19th century printmakers and it's packed full of beautiful prints. It's kind of awful, but I think I may take some of them out for my walls... They are just too lovely to be hidden away!

I've pretty much postponed all sewing projects (and Etsy updates) in order to finally fix up my little sewing room. For about a year it's been full of piles of old clothes and a bunch of random things I didn't know where to stash. I set up a little sewing corner, but it wasn't really a pleasant place to work. I decided to take the plunge last weeked and finally completely redo the room. I started by painting the walls, and all week I've been tripping over piles of relocated, disorganized junk. However, I've slowly been cleaning things out and I'm hoping to set up a nice spot to take photos for my shop and this blog. It feels like I'm moving at a snail's pace though, and all I want to do is finish!
Today I decided to take a quick outfit shot in front of my new blue wall. I seem to have lost the little plate that connects my camera to my tripod (grr!) so I've been stuck propping up my camera in rather precarious ways, hence the mysterious black blur across the bottom. Hopefully everything will come together soon and I'll have a nice new space to work with!

As summer wanes, I'm finding myself particularly drawn to neutral colors and natural textures. I suddenly want to rid my wardrobe of anything too colorful or cutesy, and fill it with colors like oatmeal, navy, marigold, and mahogany. I know I'll probably change my mind in a week or two, but right now I want the simplified, modest look of a lady living in 1914.
On a semi-aimless Etsy search this evening, I ended up at 13bees amazing shop where I found a bunch of things that are exactly the look I've been dreaming of. This girl has some seriously beautiful clothes! I wish I had a few extra pennies so I could splurge on one of these perfect dresses.

1. Finding this quote about "altweibersommer," the German word for Indian summer on my favorite color is shiny: "It means 'old ladies summer' because the many white spider silks seen at this time of the year have been associated with the hair of old women."

2. Finally finishing War and Peace! It's only taken me the whole summer...

Oh, and finding a similar quote about "old wives summer" in War and Peace! I think it's such a beautiful idea:
"For some days the weather had been calm and clear with slight frosts in the mornings--what is called an 'old wives summer.' ...On everything--far and near--lay the magic crystal glitter seen only at that time of autumn."

3. Discovering Supermarket Sarah on Sally Jane Vintage. I just LOVE this idea for an online shop...and this girl's apartment must be full of the most amazing finds!

4. Beautiful, soft navy and cream ticking fabric that I found at a little antique shop in Providence. I've fallen in love with it as I work on my next project.
5. And, a HUGE bag of wooden thread spools plus a book of old postcards I found at my neighborhood junk shop.
6. Last, but not least, a pair of brown ankle boots I thrifted that'll take me right into fall!

Mociun for Fall

I saw this image on wikstenmade the other day and I've been thinking about it ever since. The girl on the right just seems like the epitome of fall to me with her tousled hair, sheer tights, and brown boots. While I really am awful at pairing patterns, I love how the colors and textures of her outfit come together. I could definitely see myself wearing the top or bottom separately. And I can't stop staring at her boots!
I think it's also the the little hints of autumn in Brooklyn--pale light, raw wood and concrete--that are making me excited about this photo. I've forgotten how refreshing it is to get cozy against a crisp breeze! Anyway, the Mociun fall collection is full of interesting patterns and shapes...I'd recommend taking a look. There are also some nice shots of what I think is Vinegar Hill in there, too.

Rhode Island

This weekend my boyfriend and I took a little trip up to RI to visit my parents and do some exploring. We ate our fair share of seafood, battled some big waves on the beach, said hello to the lambs on the farm, and consumed large amounts of Del's frozen lemonade (well, I did, at least). We also squeezed in a little thrift shopping while we were at it.
I wanted to get some better photos of my latest creation, but the sun was setting too quickly. I made this here dress out of some 50s cotton I picked up months ago at one of my favorite antique stores in Providence. I worked with the pattern I used for my feedsack dress, but changed it around by adding a waistband. I really love the print and also made a shirt out of it...which should make an appearance here soon. The colors are just perfect for the beginnings of fall.

I've been trying to ignore it, but I keep seeing little bits of fall popping up here and there (strictly fashion-wise...I'm melting in my apartment). I figure that I better start keeping track because I'm starting to get just a tiny bit excited about tights and sweaters. Thus far, my favorites seem to fall (ha) into pretty distinct categories: high-waist trousers, 60s-inspired mini dresses, and stripes...definitely stripes. I'm kicking myself for forgetting to bid on this absolutely perfect playsuit from Liebemarlene. I can't get it out of my mind! I think it would be so cute with a tights and boots. I'm determined to find some striped cotton in the same color so I can at least make something similar!!!!

Ramona's Blouse

I am extra excited to announce that I'm now selling handmade clothing in my Etsy shop! Inspired by old farms, feedsack prints, and Indian summer days, these three blouses are the first of what I hope will be many more to come. I've already made two of these for myself and they are seriously all I want to wear!

The three pictured here are a combination of vintage, recycled, and new materials. Though I didn't really plan on it, they all fit together quite well as a little collection! The white one is extra special to me because it's made of a 1930s flour sack. I really like the idea of working exclusively with vintage fabrics, and my collection is growing for future creations.

There have been many, many nights these past few weeks where I kind of fell down the sewing rabbit hole. Once I started I just couldn't stop! I had big and rather overambitious plans to include a couple of dress in this first update, but it just turned into too much. I still have big plans for the future, though, so keep an eye out for many more handmade items from Sacaton June.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Yesterday I spent the afternoon trying to stay cool at a NY Met's game. I really don't pay attention to sports at all, but I do think watching a baseball game is a great way to spend a summer day. I'm always curious to see what people wore to traditions like these in the past since almost everything seems to have a jeans and t-shirt dress code these days. I was rather impressed with all these guys and gals who got all dressed up to cheer on their favorite team. These girls look extra nice in their hats and curls!

Bright Whites

I'm getting sleepy, but I just wanted to share a couple of old things that I've picked up recently. This here's an old pile of white flour sacks washed, ironed, and ready for my next project. They're accompanied by a funny old whiskey bottle and a pretty bunch of daisies. Even though it was extra steamy today, I'm starting to get worried that summer's approaching its end much toooo quickly. Maybe some fresh flowers will ease my fears?

Ah and this here's a beautiful 1930s chiffon blouse...so beautiful that I've been afraid to try it on. I finally tried it out last night, and I don't think it fits right. I'm going to give it another chance because I really do love it. Otherwise, it may find it's way to my Etsy shop soon.

Here's a quick shot of my birthday dress in action! The weather ended up being perfect all day, but we stuck to a few indoor activities anyway. We went up to the Met to see the Francis Bacon exhibit. It was really great---eerie in all of the best ways. For dinner we headed back to Brooklyn to Vinegar Hill House in the tiiiny neighborhood of Vinegar Hill. Tucked next to the Navy Yard, the few cobble-stoned blocks are lined with lovely old buildings. As soon as I heard the restaurant was part "Little House on the Prairie" I was sold, ha. Tonight I'm off to celebrate with a few friends...

Birthday Dress!

This year I decided to stitch up something special for my birthday! This little dress is made from a 1930s feedsack. I love the tulip print and knew when I got it that I had to do something good with it. As I was unraveling the string that held the sack together I kept thinking of all the ladies who were just making do with what they had so long ago. They were lucky to have such lovely fabric to work with!
I was hoping to head out to Fort Tilden ("pristine" beaches, old military bunkers!) today for a celebratory picnic, but the forecast is full of t-storms (surprise, surprise). I've got some indoor activities planned for the day, but hopefully the rain will stay away long enough so I can snap some pictures in the park...

It seems all summer long I’ve had the same bits of inspiration in the back of my mind. Part 1960s mini dress, part dusty country road. Add some 1930s feedsack dresses and a few Lyell collared blouses and the mix is pretty much complete. Meanwhile, my sewing machine has been calling to me ever since I abandoned it for summer sun and Sunday BBQ’s. But I just couldn’t bring myself to commit to any projects on all these lazy weekends I’ve been having.

It all came together last Monday, though. After a sleepless night and way too much caffeine, I suddenly had a so many new ideas flying through my mind and some crazy new energy to get started immediately. I have a few dresses and blouses planned that kind of jumble all of my bits of inspiration together. I suddenly decided that I want to start spending less time wandering thrift stores and more time focused on my sewing machine (…hopefully that’ll stick!).

These are my first attempts at making something out of all these ideas---a little cropped blouse meant for pairing with high waist shorts or skirts. It definitely isn’t perfect and right now I’m working on the third version, which hopefully will be rid of most of the kinks of the first two. I’m working from a pattern that I’ve made myself and it’s definitely a learning process! Even though it’s (really) frustrating at times, the challenge of perfecting something from scratch has really been exciting (as cheesy as that sounds) and so satisfying when it's finished!

Ok, ok…summer has made me extra lazy about updating this blog! I haven’t even worked on any of the Etsy listings I promised LAST Monday. Tssk, tssk! Not to worry, I made an extra long to-do list yesterday and I’m going to get to finishing it!

Even though I’ve got to be at work all day, I can’t stop thinking about a zillion other things…the top 3 currently being the warm sunshine outside (that I'm not under at the moment), the fact that summer is already half-way over (aah!), and a little project I’ve been cooking up. Steam Heat

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually glad that today has been 100% hot and humid. I've been missing those steamy summer nights in the city when the heat of the day just drifts into the night. Sleep is impossible and the half-exhausted, half-crazy I-could-do-anything feeling pervades everything. So far, this summer has been perfectly well-behaved, with breezy days and cool evenings--unlike any I've experienced here.
Perhaps it's because I've spent most of this week indoors at work or in my apartment (I feel like I'm coming down with a cold--why??) or maybe it's because they are just simply beautiful, but these photos by Annabel Mehran are making me long for open fields, shady woods, and lots of hot sun. They so immediately capture all that's good about being a girl in summer.

The Woman and the Weeping Tree by Stephanie Howard

I'm just sitting by the window with a bowl full of cherries thinking about these pretty drawings by Stephanie Howard. I spotted one of them in this post on DesignSponge last Friday. Stephanie Howard is an artist who is from and inspired by the deep south. Her short bio gave me little shivers as she brings up some of the magical and mysterious elements that drive my fascination with old southern culture. "The stories are my myths and legends, the scenery sets my religion...If I dig through the red clay of a story and find blood in the ground, it must go in the picture. I thrive on the battlefield that is now a peach orchard, bootleggers in the Indian burial ground, and small children singing church hymns with a low country drawl" she says. Her drawings are part ghost story, part southern belle. As usual, I find the feminine imagery mixed with natural tones and textures particularly inspiring.

Something Simple

I mentioned yesterday that I stopped in a new thrift store last Thursday and found some great things. Here are a few of them! I've been on the hunt for silks and other fabrics that feel light and breezy against my skin and ended up finding quite a few of them. I left the store with an armful of simple items that are perfectly summery. I couldn't decide which to wear first! This loose cream tank goes perfectly with the pairs of navy shorts I have and the stripey bathing suit will be ideal on sticky days with a little brown skirt. This silk skirt felt so soft against my skin that I just had to get it. For some reason, blue and beige have been my go-to colors so far this summer. I can't seem to get enough of 'em.

My prize of the day was this 60s silk peter pan collar dress! I love it. Right now it's too big for me so I'm not sure what to do... I'd really love to keep it, but if I don't alter it soon, I'll be sending it over to my Etsy shop...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend! I spent mine down in DC visiting friends and doing quite a lot of celebrating. Somehow I managed not to take a single photo, but I will say that I spent the weekend wearing blue and white gingham—it only seemed right. I guess this morning I was still in the patriotic spirit because I’d completely forgotten I had this skirt and when I spotted it in my closet it really made my morning. I was especially excited because I got to wear these cork wedges I found on Thursday. A new “thrift” store (a pricier, Upper West Side kind of thrift store) just opened by my work and they actually had a lot of great things! Maybe I’ll share my finds tomorrow if I have a chance.
Anyway, today I picked up my second share of veggies from the CSA I joined (hence the bundle of leafy greens)! I was so excited to find carrots, beets, peas, and other delicious things this week. I’ve already experimented with Fava beans and spring garlic left over from last week's share and sautéed radishes. Both were so delicious. I’ve got new fresh food experiments to look forward to all summer!

I've been searching for weeks for the perfect pair of vintage wedges on Etsy. In order to fill my unrealistic dreams of Swedish Hasbeens, I've been trying to find a cheaper vintage replacement. I think I finally found the one's I've been hoping for...but they're too small!!! In a more perfect world where my feet were one size smaller and my Etsy budget limitless, here's what I would wear:

Signs of Summer

It was still light out after 8 this evening and the clouds had that storm-mixed-with-sunset glow so I dashed outside to take a photo. I had to walk for quite a few blocks before I could find an abandoned street (I still feel pretty shy about busting out my tripod just anywhere), but I didn't mind since the evening was warm as if it was finally hinting at an oncoming summer, and there was a strong smell of flowers in the air.
Today I threw on a whole bunch of my favorite things in a never-worn-together-before combination. I could wear this blue dress every day, and just might once it's actually warm enough to go sleeveless. I've also worn these sandals about a million times--they were my luckiest find at a local junk store last summer. Oh, and it wouldn't be my neighborhood if there wasn't a bit of scattered trash in the photo. (I also had to do a little photoshop-ing to get rid of an unnoticed profanity on the wall by the weeds, ha). I spotted a few good photo spots on my walk...so hopefully there will be more outdoor outfit shots to come.

I have to admit that I haven't been able to get that delicate collared tank out of my mind since I popped in the store about a month ago. I was just daydreaming for a moment about how it might be possible to create one myself by cutting up a thrifted silk blouse and handstitching all the pieces back together...ha, maybe in my dreams. And those tights in the second photo! I've been wishing for more black dresses on all these dreary, rainy days we've been having. Those tights would be the absolute perfect accompaniment!

After waking up to bright sunshine this morning, I felt the urge to wear this wisp of blouse I thrifted last week. It's oh so airy and has the prettiest details like scalloped edges, cut-0ut flowers, and embroidery. I love the way it just drapes and flutters. I was on the fence about listing it in my shop, but I guess I've claimed it for now! This skirt also used to be in my shop, but after someone never paid for it I forgot to relist it and decided it would be better to wear it than to have it laying around. The whole outfit turned out to be kind of soft and breezy. I think I was trying to channel the carefree femininity of the 40s-inspired looks in The Edge of Love. I seriously could spend my whole summer in those outfits!

Dreaming: The Maritime Loft

I don't usually stray off topic here, but my lease is coming to an end soon and I've got apartments on the mind. Searching for an apartment is one of my least favorite things to do in New York and I've already begun trolling craigslist for some glimmer of hope come August. For some crazy reason, I've also got my mind set on moving into a studio, even though I know the chances of actually finding one I can afford are laughably slim. Sigh. Naturally, when I came across these photos on the Anthropologie site, my heart leaped just a little bit. The maritime elements and colors mixed with deep browns and rough details are just so dreamy! I'm such a sucker for calm blues, unfinished woods, and rusting metals when it comes to decorating. I also love the vintage-, almost science-inspired pieces like the dentist lamp, the glass bottles and beakers, and especially the freestanding magnifying glasses. Now I wish more than ever I could find a new, slightly crumbling apartment of my own.

It seems like it's been ages since I've done any sort of outfit post. This is a bit of a lazy outfit post, seeing as I just threw on a dress before dashing out the door yesterday. After waking up extra late, my boyfriend and I met some friends at the New Museum for The Generational: Younger than Jesus exhibit. It was crazy and weird as expected. One of my favorite pieces was the result of an artist purchasing everything on a person--right down to his or her underwear. Everything they'd been wearing was spread out on the table. It was an interesting/kind of creepy look at a random person's personality.
Anyway...after that we impulsively decided to have a little picnic for dinner in Central Park where these silly photos were taken. I look kind of like a pouty kid in the first one and I'm just goofing around in the one below, my crazy, half-grown out hair going everywhere. On the other hand, I finally got a shot of me wearing the dress I made a few weeks ago. Here it is!

I've just uploaded a handful of new things to Sacaton June Vintage! I've been procrastinating for weeks and it's finally done! I've also been a terrible blogger, but I do have an excuse. I spent last week celebrating the marriage of two of my very best friends! They had a beautiful, though rainy, garden wedding that was simply amazing. Then we journeyed to Maine for a gorgeous weekend spent with wonderful friends. Needless to say, I'm having a bit of a hard time getting back in the swing of things... I will try to get my hands on some photos if I can, if there is anyone out there who still reads this blog! :)

Inspiration: Earth Tones

Argh, I've been very bad at posting lately! The combination between warm weather busyness, preparing for my best friend's wedding, and my recent laziness about taking photos has resulted in a severe lack of posts. Hopefully I'll get back on track soon! I also have a whole pile of clothes that have been photographed...I just haven't gotten around to listing them on Etsy yet. Laziness, again!

Anyway...I saw these images from the Rochambeau Fall 09 lookbook on Refinery 29 today (there's more here) and I thought they were pretty cool. They reminded me that inspiration can sometimes come from the most unexpected places (often the best kind of inspiration). Even though it's a men's line, I really like the natural tones and textures. I've been especially drawn to gray and nude tones lately; I think it's a reaction to my search for the perfect, delicate, fluttery bridesmaid's dress. Whatever the reason, I'm wishing I could hit refresh and suddenly refill my wardrobe with silks in soft earth tones...I guess I better start saving my pennies!

Curling Experiment

I decided to do a little curling experiment this morning since I woke up super early feeling like my cold was finally disappearing. I thought I'd use clips instead of bobby pins (I remember seeing a video comparing the two some time ago). I've never been very good at creating pretty, even curls with rags or pins...so I really wasn't sure how these would turn out. It was tricky, at first, to roll the hair up just right, but I got the hang of it as I went along. Once again, I got a little impatient and didn't keep them as even as I could have (oh well!). After I took the pins out a couple of hours later and brushed out the curls, I couldn't really decide what to do with them, ha. I remembered these amazing photos and tried out a little tie in my hair. It was cute, but I was gearing up for a hardcore shopping trip to find a bridesmaid dress (a total bust), and I ended up just letting the curls relax and hang loose. I really liked piling all the curls on top of my head, though---perhaps I'll try this out again with an attempt at one of the updo looks I'm so in love with this spring...

A Completed Project

So I know that in my last post I expressed my eagerness to sew a 60s-style shift dress from my new vintage fabric. However, the idea of marking and sewing darts seemed daunting and I really wanted to try one of the patterns I picked up in Philly...so I ended up making something completely different! I used up the rest of the blue gingham that I had around and finished the dress with a few mustard-colored buttons I so thoughtfully received with the dress I ordered from 1385. I cheated a little bit because I'm still supposed to add an elastic to cinch the waist, but I was too anxious to wear the dress on Sunday and wore a belt instead. I was pretty proud of myself for finishing it in only two sewing sessions since I am normally such a procrastinator. I'm trying to buy less and make more these days.
Anyway, enough rambling. I seem to have come down with a stupid cold (grrr). There's nothing worse than a stuffy nose in spring. I'll be home all day, hoping I'll wake up from one of my many naps with the ability to breathe again!!
